Making Waves for a Purpose: Swim 1922 Success!

The Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. proudly hosted its annual Swim 1922 event, continuing the Sorority’s commitment to water safety and drowning prevention in the Black community. Led by committee chair Carlitha Simmons, this impactful program brought together families, youth, and community members for an afternoon of education, empowerment, and fun.

Held at Southeast Raleigh Elementary School and Southeast YMCA, the event featured certified swim instructors who provided free swimming lessons, safety demonstrations, and vital information on overcoming fear and stigma surrounding swimming in the community. Additionally, CPR familiarization was offered, giving attendees an introduction to life-saving skills that can make a critical difference in emergencies.

In a continued effort to increase access and encourage swimming as a life skill, the chapter awarded seven swimming scholarships to well-deserving youth. These scholarships will provide recipients with formal swim instruction beyond the event, reinforcing the importance of long-term water safety education.

Swim 1922 is a national initiative in partnership with USA Swimming that aligns with Sigma Gamma Rho’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce drowning rates in underrepresented communities.

Thanks to the hard work of Soror Simmons and the dedicated planning committee, our chapter continues to uplift and empower our community—both in and out of the water.
