This national program is designed to highlight some of the prevalent concerns that negatively impact our youth:  drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, etc. Held on the second Saturday of March by alumnae chapters nationwide, as a unified effort to support our youth, simultaneous Sigma Youth Symposiums address issues that affect teens today. BLS partners with various organizations like ECPI and Tech Talent South to host our annual event at the Girls Club. Watch our video about this empowering event here: https://youtu.be/Te9XaS6rNDM

This national program is designed to address challenges faced by school-aged children who are economically and/or educationally at risk. Members collect and donate educational materials, equipment and school supplies to help support and sustain students throughout the academic year. The program includes mentoring and tutoring and has given rise to our annual Youth Symposium. Locally, BLS has adopted Carnage Middle School as it’s school of focus for Operation Big Book Bag. In addition to refreshing their media center we donate supplies twice each year. We honor the faculty and staff with a breakfast break during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Cognizant that African-Americans bear a disproportionate burden of cancer – the highest mortality rate of any ethnic group – Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is committed to providing education and active support of early detection as well as research for the prevention and cure of breast, prostate, ovarian, colon, and other types of cancers. Locally, BLS makes an annual donation to The Sisters Inspiring Sisters Incorporated. The Sisi mission is to help eradicate cancer by closing the gaps of disparity and eliminating barriers to care.

Oak City Cares is a hub for connecting individuals and families, who are at risk of, or are experiencing homelessness, to coordinated services that create a path to stable housing and renewed hope. BLS is one of 70 volunteer and faith-based organizations that lends time and resources to Oak City Cares. As part of our on-going community service, BLS volunteers on the first Saturday of every month.

Coats For The Children is WRAL’s major holiday fundraising campaign for Salvation Army families. A gently used or new coat your child has outgrown may be just the right size for a child in need. Each year BLS not only donates hundreds of coats but we also donate thousands of dollars to purchase winter gear and toys for children. Since 2015, BLS has donated over 1000 coats and over $7,000 to this cause.

BLS hosts Rhoyal TaKeover Weekend in conjunction with the Raleigh Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. RTWKND is a festive weekend of events that features local and national recording artists. Held in September on the weekend following Labor Day, the event is not like any other in the Triangle area. Proceeds benefit national and local programs, in particular our donation to WRAL Coats for The Children.
