Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. sponsored the Inaugural 5k Run/Walk as part of the festivities to celebrate the 81st Northeast Regional Conference held in Raleigh, NC.
Beta Lambda Sigma, the local alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc, in Raleigh, organized the event under the leadership of Soror Miriam Melvin, 5k Run/Walk committee chairwoman. Over 100 sorority members, affiliate members, and members of the Raleigh community gathered at Crabtree Creek Greenway Trail to enjoy either a leisurely walk or a brisk run surrounded by lush greenery on a sunny April 1st.
Melvin credits the hard work and determination of her committee members for the success of the first 5k Run/Walk event.
“I am so proud of the committee. We ran like a well oiled machine,” said Melvin.
Soror Michelle Lewis-Gould along with other sorors provided medical care as needed.
Corporate sponsors for the event include Omega Sports, who provided t-shirts, gift cards and free running shoes. Athletic wear company Saucony also supplied items for giveaways, running shoes and waist belts for participants in addition to a try-on station with 25 pairs of Saucony running shoes so that participants could try on different models of shoes.
Wegman’s and Publix grocery stores also contributed to giveaways, and Durham CoOpt Market, The Fresh Market, Ford’s Produce, and Red and White Quality Foods provided nutritious snacks for runners and walkers such as oranges and bananas along with water and PowerAid sports drinks.
Due to the success of this inaugural event, Soror Melvin has submitted a proposal to the Beta Lambda Sigma chapter and the City of Raleigh for next year’s 5k Run/Walk for the date of April 20, 2024.
